Artist Statement
Clay work is a gift from our ancestors passed down through the generations. I love to reflect on the lineage of potters that goes back many millenia. In this way, clay connects me to the best parts of our collective history, our creative legacy. I create my pottery on the wheel and through handbuilding techniques in much the same way they did, only I use modern technology to assist in my production.
I work in stoneware and sculptural clays for maximum durability. My pots are finished in glazes that I primarily mix myself. The alchemy of creating pots from wet clay that is transformed into stone then finished with hand mixed glazes feels like pure magic to me. I often work with simple patterns and nature inspired designs to adorn my work.
I aim to create pots that feel as though they could have sprouted from a seed. They Humbly echo the divine symmetry of nature with all its balanced patterns and shapes that fit human hands so well. I hope my pots bring a sense of wonder to daily rituals. I hope my collectors reach for my mug for their daily brew because of the sense of peace and joy it invokes. Through my work, I hope others feel the sense of peace that comes from our natural heritage, and it invokes a sense of protection for this one rare, bountiful, and beautiful planet we all call home.
Philosophy
My pottery is intended to be held, used as an adornment for the home. I strive to create forms that feel natural to the hand and eye, like a burnished river rock: comforting and familiar. My inspiration is deeply rooted in the Appalachian Forest and cultivated gardens that surround my mountain home. I am deeply moved and inspired by my time spent in the forest. It is a spiritual place where I find refuge after my days working in the city. I find joy in embellishing my pottery with simple patterns, botanicals, and critters as homage to this natural paradise. With time spent in the woods, under a canopy of green and surrounded by wild flora, with my feet on the ground, I am restored. It is this grace that I infuse into my work and attempt to offer to others.
